POPULAR TRADITIONAL AND LOCAL WHITE VARIETIES

 

 

LAŠKI RIZLING – is a local variety in Podravje, Posavje and in the Vipavska dolina. It is the most widespread planted variety in Slovenia with a recently rising reputation. It bears abundant fruit, though leading to thin wine. Its aromatic characteristics are more neutral than generous. The prevailing minerality may even surprise connoisseurs. Laški rizling has the great potential for the production of sweet “predicate” wines.      

Synonym: Welschriesling

Colour: greenish yellow

Aroma: lemon, early apples, mildly floral

Taste: light, crisp

- produced in Štajerska Slovenija, Prekmurje, Bizeljsko-Sremič, Dolenjska, Bela Krajina, Vipavska dolina, Kras

MALVAZIJA – a variety of increasing importance for the entire Primorska region. It enables versatile use from young and fresh wines – from stainless steel tanks – sparklers, barrique and even sweet wines.

Synonym: Malvasia

Colour: hay yellow with hue of green

Aroma: exotic fruit, acacia

Taste: sensuous, crisp, mildly bitter

- produced in Goriška brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras, Slovenska Istra

REBULA – it boasts extreme versatility, from sparkling wines, daily consumption quality wines, sweet wines from dried berries, up to special wines produced with the maceration of the pomace, produced and stored in Georgian amphorae. It is becoming increasingly popular.   

Synonym: Ribolla gialla

Colour: yellow with a tint of green

Aroma: discretely fruity and cedar

Taste: lively, drinkable or even demanding

SAUVIGNONASSE - is a newly established synonym for the Tocai friulano. The wine is characterised by its softness and high extract, even in disgraceful years. Worth experiencing.

Synonym: Zeleni sauvignon

Colour: goldish yellow

Aroma: field flowers with almonds

Taste: fruity - acidity, full bodied and balanced

ŠIPON – an important variety in Podravje. According to the legend the name derives from the French word »si-bon«, which means “so good,” a phrase from Napoleon-times. The variety is not unknown, but its international recognition is vague. Minerality defines its identity. Similar to Welschriesling, Šipon can be used to produce all the wines in the wine quality pyramid.

Aroma: lime, pineapple

Taste: mineral, awaking curiosity

RANINA – Its name derives from the Slovene expression meaning early. It is highly esteemed as a young wine, overripe berries can make a complex wine, highly suitable for the production of sweet wines.

Synonym: Bouvier, Radgonska ranina

Colour: close yellowish 

Aroma: floral, like linden 

Taste: soft and structured, rich
