RARE AND INDIGENOUS WHITE VARIETIES

 

 

PINELA – found only in the Vipavska dolina and some in the Kras. It is known in Slovenia since 1932. Pinela yields very full wines, which are likely to accompany more demanding dishes.

Colour: yellowish

Aroma: florally fruity and rounded

Taste: balanced, hearty, with long aftertaste

- produced in Vipavska dolina, Kras

ZELEN – a variety typical of the upper Vipavska dolina. The Zelen association provides original bottling. This variety is extremely popular in Slovenia and cannot be found anywhere else

Colour: hay yellow with notable shades of green

Aroma: apples, pears, rosemary

Taste: ripe, spicy

- produced in Vipavska dolina, Kras

VITOVSKA GRGANJA – It grows in the Slovenian and the Italian part of the Kras and is becoming highly trendy. Its origins remain unknown. It is frequently mistaken for Rebula.

Synonym: Vitovska

Colour: hay yellow

Aroma: fresh, fruity, somewhat mineral

Taste: mild texture, pleasantly tart

GLERA – widespread in Goriška brda, the Vipavska dolina and in Istra. It produces lovely cylindrical grape with yellow berries. Only a handful of winegrowers grow this variety. 

Colour: bright yellow

Aroma: slightly aromatic, fruity

Taste: dry, lively, medium bodied

- produced in Goriška brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras

KLARNICA – supposedly was named after a lady named Klara. It occurs in the lower Vipavska dolina, where some winegrowers grow it. If the wine is ripened in acacia barrels, it acquires the aromas of honey and acacia blossoms. The maceration process is also used in wine production. 

Colour: greenish yellow

Aroma: floral

Taste: harmonious and rich

- produced in Goriška brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras

RUMENI PLAVEC – this formerly popular variety can only be found in Bizeljsko nowadays. If not overcropped, the wine has a medium body.

Colour: hay yellow, intensive  

Aroma: fruity, reminiscent of pears 

Taste: medium body, rich

- produced in Dolenjska

RANFOL – calls Štajerska its home.  It used to be a fairly widespread variety. These days, Ranfol mostly ends up in different blends. Only 550 litres are registered in Slovenia annually.

Synonym: Belina

Colour: straw, very light

Aroma: floral and fruity

Taste: light, easy drinking, marked acidity

- produced in Štajerska Slovenija, Prekmurje, Bizeljsko-Sremič, Dolenjska

KRALJEVINA – is a variety with an abundant crop. The berries will develop a slight tint of red in the sun. It is an obligatory ingredient for Cviček and therefore rarely appears as the varietal wine.

Colour: light yellow

Aroma: neutral, mildly floral

Taste: light finish, mild

- produced in Štajerska Slovenija, Prekmurje, Bizeljsko-Sremič, Dolenjska, Bela Krajina
