POPULAR INTERNATIONAL WHITE VARIETIES

 

 

 

 

 

BELI PINOT – is becoming popular once more, distinguished by an expressive body. Matching its acidity while the aroma is reminiscent of pears. This is the best way to identify it.

CHARDONNAY – the second most widespread white variety in the world and third most common in Slovenia does not need special presentation. It is to be found in all Slovenian wine producing regions and it is worth its great reputation. A skilled wine maker can produce nearly everything out of it, ranging from sparkling, to so called  sweet “predicate” wines.

RENSKI RIZLING – an internationally renowned variety ranks number ten in Slovenia. The wine produced of this variety is known as “the king of wines and wine for kings” which testifies the exception of this wine. After several years of aging, it alters its sensory profile: the young wine is characterised by its floral and fruity aromas, while later on these evolve into petroleum and kerosene, becoming dominant aromas, crucial for an easy identification. The varietal is gaining international recognition.

SAUVIGNON – in the last years, the best Slovenian Sauvignon wines equally compete with international concurrent. Slovenia’s natural predispositions are stunning for growing this variety and have not been exploited to the full yet. This serves as solid ground for the belief that this variety, with the many international awards, will ensure Slovenian sauvignons the entry to the international market.

SIVI PINOT – in the recent years a very popular as well as fashionable variety on some markets. Frequently accompanying the fruity aromas is the subtle animal odour, while its orange colour makes it recognisable upon sight. It can appear as a charming wine from the current vintage or even a surprisingly concentrated sweet wine.

TRAMINEC – there are two types: Traminer and the Gewürztraminer. As evident from the name, it is an aromatic variety, which enjoys an excellent reputation in Slovenia. It can be a completely dry wine or an exceptional sweet wine – such as ice wine.

RUMENI MUŠKAT – is an aromatic variety spread in all winemaking regions, exemplifying special organoleptic properties everywhere. In Podravje the aroma will be more floral and fine, in Posavje elegant and rich, in Primorska spicy and expressive.

Synonym: Muskateller  Gelber, Muscato bianco

RIZVANEC – a popular young wine in the recent years, with no ageing potential. In Slovenia this variety is seldom found as a varietal wine or in blends.

Synonym: Müller-Thurgau

- produced in Štajerska Slovenija, Prekmurje, Bizeljsko-Sremič

KERNER – is an aromatic variety similar to the Rhine Riesling. It used to be extremely popular, because it would ripen wonderfully even in unfavourable years. It is characterised by its sweet “predicate” wines. 95 % of this variety is produced in Podravje.

MUŠKAT OTTONEL – a semi-late ripening variety, characterised by its harmonic muscat bouquet, which is less aggressive than that of the Rumeni muškat. It is not very widespread in Slovenia, but some wine makers are fond of it.

- produced in Štajerska Slovenija, Prekmurje, Bizeljsko-Sremič

ZELENI SILVANEC – this formerly extremely popular variety seems to have lost its élan. It failed to please the majority of wine consumers due to its fine, but gentle wine aroma. In Slovenia it can be found in Podravje and a bit of it in Posavje.

Synonym: Grüner Silvaner
