POPULAR INTERNATIONAL RED VARIETIES

CABERNET SAUVIGNON – most frequently featured in Bordeaux-like cuvées. In the recent years, it has been characterised by a more outstanding varietal character. Its time in Slovenia is yet to come.

- produced in Goriška brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras, Slovenska Istra

MERLOT – an important variety for all known types of blends, since it normally tops cabernet sauvignon in Slovenia. After Refošk it is the second most widespread red variety in the country.

- produced in Goriška brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras, Slovenska Istra

CABERNET FRANC – is represented only with a small number of winegrowers who specialised in this sort. In spite of its interesting herbaceous aroma, the variety is not widespread, nor important in quantity.

- produced in Goriška brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras, Slovenska Istra

BARBERA – seldom found as the varietal wine, even though its reputation is increasing. The quality of wine greatly depends on the number of the grapes per vine. The most interesting wines originate from the Vipavska dolina.

- produced in Goriška brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras

MODRA FRANKINJA – normally a lighter to medium bodied wine, characterised by a pleasant vegetal nose, and slight spiciness. It can be a rather easy drinking wine, as well as a serious red wine. The decision rests in the hands of the winegrower and winemaker.

Synonym: Blaufränkisch

- produced in Štajerska Slovenija, Prekmurje, Bizeljsko-Sremič, Dolenjska, Bela Krajina

MODRI PINOT – there is hardly a serious sparkling wine that does not involve this variety, and there is hardly a modern wine country that does not wish to tackle the challenging production of this varietal, often described as “spoilt”. Virtually trendy everywhere.

Synonym: Pinot noir, Pinot nero

- produced in Štajerska Slovenija, Prekmurje, Bizeljsko-Sremič, Dolenjska, Bela Krajina, Goriška brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras, Slovenska Istra

SYRAH – the most popular variety in the world, which is more-and-more planted on all the continents. It requires abundant sunshine, since it can only express its full potential when fully riped. The situation is identical in Slovenia.

Synonym: Shiraz

- produced in Goriška brda, Vipavska dolina, Kras, Slovenska Istra

ZWEIGELT – very rare. Slovenia, with a total production about 160 hl, although the number of Zweigelt admirers is increasing, since this wine boasts an interesting aroma of berries.

- produced in Štajerska Slovenija, Prekmurje, Bizeljsko-Sremič, Dolenjska, Bela Krajina

GAMAY – there are hardly any Slovenian winemakers who would bottle this varietal wine. Currently the most esteemed wines come from the Bizeljsko area. Gamay can be a young wine, but it has some potential for aging.

- produced in Štajerska Slovenija, Bizeljsko-Sremič, Dolenjska, Bela Krajina, Goriška brda, Slovenska Istra
